Cardiff City’s long serving midfielder and former vice-captain Riccy Scimeca has announced his retirement from football with immediate effect. The ex WBA and Nottm Forest man has been plagued by injuries over the past three seasons and endured a toprrid time with persistent groin problems, infections and ankle trouble.

Riccy has been a model professional, even in the face of adversity, for his four year spell at Cardiff City. At times he was imperious, commanding and provided a real goal threat both in the air and arriving late into the box. He showed glimpses of that form during cameo appearances this term and, prior to his latest injury set-back, made a difference following his recall.

Cardiff City fans will want to thank Scimeca for his form, temperament and leadership on and off the field and wish him all the best for the future. Unfortunately, his injury problems never fully subsided and at 34, further operations, rehabiliation and training were not a realistic option. Many thanks Riccy and all the best.
