Cardiff City manager Dave Jones is looking at a number of players he believes are capable of filling the gargantuan void left by the departure of Roger Johnson – thats on top on the gaping chasm in leadership and experienced cover we left when allowing club captain Darren Purse to walk out for nothing.
Whilst midfield is rightly still a high priority, 2 central defenders must come in and the sooner the better. Time to gel with a team is important regardless of position, but the ioncoming players will never have played together before and will need time to establish a partnership.
Some players strongly linked with Cardiff City include:
Damien Delaney: the QPR man is vastly experienced at this level and is a solid and talented player. An Irish International, he has impressed in recent years for Hull and now QPR. He is a realistic target and may be allowed to leave, however, Ipswich Town are also ‘keane’.
Mark Hudson: We almost signed Hudson 6 months ago but he remains a Charlton Athletic player. He is not all that experienced for his age (27) but Dave Jones is a fan and he is also regarded to be somewhat of a leader. Hudson would like a move back to the Championship, and would surely be allowed to leave the Addicks. However, there are doubts over his credentials as a first rate centre-half.
Zak Whitbread: The former Liverpool youngster was tipped for a big future but has failed to reach his potential as yet. He is a tall presence at the back but has played only at league one level with current club Millwall. The Lions would be asking for a fee of around £700k for one of their key players last season.
Jones and Ridsdale have been in talks with a number of players, and expect some definitive news soon. James Collins and Danny Gabbidon have both been linked with a return but wage demands are almost certain to scupper any prospective move.
