Cardiff City manager Dave Jones is being constantly linked with the vacant West Brom manager’s position with the West Midlands club closing in on a successor to Tony Mowbray.
Jones was a target of the Baggies several years ago but was never offered the job. However, WBA chairman Jeremy Peace is an admirer of Jones talents and the job he has done on a tight budget with Cardiff City.
Whilst Dave Jones is a longstanding and experienced manager, Bluebirds fans are not fully supportive of his tactics or personality at times. However, very few pwople would agree that now is a good time for him to go.
We have just lost our best player in Roger Johnson , and appear to have relatively little transfer funds to re-invest having blown the vast majority on Michael Chopra. Any new manager now would not be installed for several weeks, and have next to no time to bring in replacements and assess his squad.
Despite the strong and persistent rumours in the midlands, Dave Jones seems certain to stay in South Wales. His family are settled, he is building for the future and regularly talks of a ‘job half done’. He was instrumental in the new training ground, while he has constantly re-enforced the need for a new stadium. Add to that his close relationship with Peter Ridsdale, squad he has put together and his personal equity stake in the club – Jones is staying.
Alan Irvine of Preston is another leading contender for the WBA job.

I have heard that Dave Jones has contacted West Brom begging them for the job. Irvine was all ready to be offered the job but Jones has asked to be interviewed.
Seems extremely unlikely! However, stranger things have happened. Few would think that a disaster for Cardiff City – just very bad timing.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that was true Lord Shepherd, I bet he can’t wait to get out of Cardiff City.
It has been known for SOME managers to remain loyal….less inevitable than Roberto’s on/on move to Wigan
He is a gonner bigger club and as a Jack i am loving it and at least Roberto left for the Premiereship you lot were all laughing when we lost Roberto now its our turn your best player and now your manager ha ha ha
I think you mis-understood our laughter. It was only funny in that you Jacks were constantly insisting he wouldn’t leave – then he did. We have no such illusions, truth is – I’d have Roberto over Jones as a manager any day!
We were under no illusions with Martinez after all it is football and contracts dont seem to be worth much these days
