Birmingham City’s relegation from the Premiership yesterday was a hammer blow for Cardiff City as the Bluebirds missed out on a hefty chunk of money.

The Blues paid Cardiff a big fee for former striker Cameron Jerome, but the final installment was only payable if Birmingham City retained their Premiership status. However on a tense final day, Fulham’s Danny Murphy scored the crucial goal that kept the Cottagers up, and doomed Birmingham City and Reading to the drop.

For long periods, Birmingham looked a good bet to stay up, but disasterous form towards the end of the season ended their hopes and they join City in the Championship next season.

That means that Cardiff City miss out on a £500k payment. That half a million was not included in our financial budgets but would have been a hugely welcome boost.
