Losing 3-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderes could mean a lot of things but it was the manner of the defeat that is the most disappointing.

The three goals we conceded were poor. We just dont have the fizz and direction to attack with great threat and we are carrying certain players in the team.

Last night, Purse and Loovens were shaky. McNaughton and Capaldi restrained and conservative. McPhail and Rae static and by-passed. Parry threatened but couldnt’t get on the ball and Ledley looked jaded and is beginning to look more like a central midfielder all the time as he fails to involve himself on the wing.

In attack Hasselbaink and Fowler did their all, Fowler missing a great chance but showing some nice touches – but is it enough? We’re competing in every match and not being outplayed, but don’t seem able to raise our game – in the way that Wolves did in the second half.

And that is what did for us, we had no plan B, no other level to step up to and we looked scared. Wolves didnt open us up with the incisive attacking flair they are capable of – we just bottled it.

A lot of the problems seem down to confidence. The liveliness and pace can return, and will have to – starting with Scunthorpe Utd on Saturday – we simply must come back to life and get a result. The players are underperforming as a unit, each player giving enough so as not to be singled out, but more is possible from every single one and we cry out for a leader, someone to drag the side forward and make things happen.

Disappointing, and time for some fresh blood…..?
