Newcastle United have reportedly requested that star striker Andy Carroll is withdrawn from England’s squad to face France tonight. The striker has been struggling with injury, but Fabio Capello yesterday confirmed he was handing Carroll a chance and he would start the game.

The Magpies however after concerned an England appearance would pose an injury set-back for their striker, who has excelled in Newcastle’s solid start to the season.

If Capello and the FA relent, and Carroll becomes unavailable for selection, there is an increased likelihood of a first cap for Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd. At present, he is expected to feature on the bench – but could be considered a direct replacement for Carroll.

Peter Crouch is another option for Capello in an injury-ravaged England squad. However, after controversially calling up Bothroyd – the Italian is likely to want to see the former Perugia player in action.

Best of luck Jay.
