Cardiff City have confirmed that both Jay Bothroyd and Chris Burke are to leave the club after neither was able to agree previous contract offers from the Bluebirds. Both were expected to depart but the confirmation comes as a blow, with both playing key roles over the past seasons.

Whilst we only paid £300k for Bothroyd, and recruited Burke on a free transfer – the duo went on to become first choice in their respective positions. Bothroyd was pivotal to our attack, and started this season in the form of his life. An England call-up followed, but he failed to reach anywhere near his best form as his season meandered to a disappointing end.

Chris Burke too was a frstrating player this season. We know he is capable of tearing teams apart with his pace, trickery and creativity but he lost confidence quickly, becoming less of a threat out wide and losing all semblence of his goalscoring ability. Always a weak player, he was easy to knock off the ball in attack and defence while his crossing was also disappointing.

Bothroyd looks destined for the Premiership, with Everton leading the chase. Curke will almost certainly look North of the border in order to be closer to his estranged wife and son after finding contact difficult while based in South Wales. Both leave with our thanks and best wishes for the future.
