Was Souza Really At Cardiff City On Weds ?!

QPR manager Pablo Souza was gushing after QPR got a draw at Ninian Park – with they players they have, and with Cardiff City showing a distinct lack of invention, his disappointment at not winning the game is understandable. However, I felt on the night QPR were as bad as we were and certainly showed little attacking ambition of their own. Talk of a ‘fantastic performance’ and ‘two points dropped’ seems as far wide of the mark as an Andy Legg 35 yarder on his right foot!

Bizarrely, Souza has now added to his assertion and described us to qpr.co.uk as:

‘A Club with big ambitions for the Premier League. They have invested a lot and this is also a very difficult place to come, with a strong atmosphere.’

Now, I have a little trouble accepting that and to be honest it begs the question: was he thinking of a different game?!? The atmosphere on Wednesday was appalling, tho only meaningful noise directed at Wayne Routledge or made by the sparse but committed QPR faithful, I have no reason for this but the atmosphere Wednesday was a flat as the leftover pancakes from the day before.

As for our investment… Two players who started were on loan. Konstantopoulos and Chopra. Kennedy, McNaughton, Ledley, Chris Burke and Gavin Rae were all free transfers. Roger Johnson (£250k) and Darren Purse (£600k) both cost money but some years ago now while our longest serving player Paul Parry cost £75k from Hereford United back under Lennie Lawrence. Of the newer players its Ross McCormack alone who cost a fee, he was out of contract so we paid Motherwell £100k for his services. I agree that is a great investment in our future, but does not qualify for an investment as I suspect Souza meant it!

For info: on the bench were two more loan players, two free transfers and a £300k man.


QPR have a new found wealth, and have been splashing their cash around to reasonable effect. I’m not quite sure what a club owned by F1 tycoons Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore see as ‘invested a lot’ but I doubt the £1m spent on our ENTIRE starting XI qualifies.

I promise to stop talking about this now, but Souza seems to have coerced several QPR fansites, and the media into thinking their performance was good. I didnt see the defeat to Ipswich so it may well be better than that, but don’t bet on a result at Barnsley if Rangers play the same way!
