Uninspiring Cup Tie Offers City Chance To Progress

Cardiff City were today handed a ‘nothing’ cup tie after being drawn to face fellow Championship side Burnley.

After seeing off big-spending Leicester City, the Bluebirds had the chance to draw a highly lucrative tie in the last 16 but managed to avoid the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United to secure a clash against Burnley.

If it were not to be a glamour, money-spinning occasion – City would surely have liked a chance to progress to the quarter-finals by facing lower league opposition. With all due respect to Aldershot Town, they would have been underdogs against the Bluebirds and we could have been cautiously optimistic.

Nevertheless, we are playing a team of roughly equal calibre, another Championship side who will certainly be mid-table and will hope to challenge for the play-offs this year. A crucial bonus for Cardiff City is that we were drawn at home, always a plus for a Cup tie.

It wasn’t a tie many would have picked, but it means we have a decent chance if we chose to play a strong XI. One thing Malky Mackay will hope is that this time, we might not need extra time after managing to rack up plenty of extra minutes in the Cup so far- a difficult proposition given our relatively small and inexperienced squad.
