The Misfiring Midfield Of Cardiff City

Any Cardiff City fan will tell you (should you ask, that is) that the vast majority of our problems last year were becasue of a lacklustre, and under-performing midfield unit. Bottle, fight and spirit will also feature in an answer, but these apply well to our midfield also.

There were times we looked OK, even good in spells but our midfield only ever matched the opponents – never outplayed save for some inspiring wing play from Wayne Routledge. McPhail, Parry and Whittingham were consistently criticised and all would surely admit to underacheiving.

In a way it’s good to be able to identify the weak points and I think all would agree we need 2 players – one to enforce and boss, and another highly creative addition. Unfortunately we have seen no additions whatsoever in midfield – a fact that will frustrate and worry fans in equal measures.

I understand that we needed to act quickly to shore up our defence after losing Purse and Johnson. However, there has been little transfer talk whatsoever about our midfield which badly needs a shake-up. It was clear on Wednesday evening that the midfield was again not right, and looked depressingly like last season’s lack of drive, and attacking flair.

Chris Burke will likely be something akin to a new signing having shaken off his injury and going through a full pre-season. He was bright and underused last campaign but continues to impress in the frindlies to date.

However, Parry, Rae, McPhail, Whittingham and Ledley remain impressive only on paper and we can’t go into the season hopefully they will be different players to last term. All look better for the break and seem more hungry but thats not enough.

Dave Jones has identified 3 players he wants, and if Ledley or McCormcak have to go first then that must happen ASAP. Get on with it Phil Brown!
