Cardiff City struggled for goals last season, and were hit by the hammer blow of losing their top scorer shortly before the season began.
That said, they have signed 2 proven goalscorers in Robbie Fowler and Steve MacLean. Fowler joined late and was unavailable for duty in the 1-0 loss to Stoke City.
How we cried out for a poacher, or a spark from someone to set us going. Fowler could have provided this, and is an expert at holding the ball up – something else lacking from our weak frontline.
It is an admirable stance not to risk Fowler, and to make sure he is truly ready before throwing him in. However, the club are playing a dangerous game. If they continue to be toothless and throw away points before Fowler arrives – they risk turning him into a saviour, the answer to all our problems.
If then, Fowler did not make an immediate impact, the pressure on him and the team would double and we could see ourselves in mid-table and out of the promotion race. We must not become a one man team again.
At times last season, teams targetted Chopra, marking him tightly and denying his service from McPhail. It worked, and we struggled badly for goals. The idea, this time around, is that for a team to concentrate on nullifying one player, would mean that another steps up and hurts them elsewhere.
Put two defenders on Cristiano Ronaldo, and Scholes will shoot for fun from the edge of the area. OK thats an irrelevant example, but a mark of the truly good sides.
We need Fowler back and playing soon, without the burden of pressure and expectation being any higher. We also need another striker until Feeney discovers his role in the side and MacLean is liberated to play alongside a bigger player and can drop deeper himself.
Of course, this is ridiculous after just one game of the season, but would seriously worry me if it were to continue this way. We will comfortably beat QPR, and everything will be well. Hopefully.
