Ridsdale Warning To Cardiff Fans

Cardiff City will not be able to strengthen their misfiring squad when the chance arises in January and must change things dramatically with the same group of players currently at the club.

Last year, teams like Sunderland strengthened significantly mid-season which paid dividends as they knew their weaknesses, signed accordingly and won promotion. We signed David Forde, Warren Feeney, Jason Byrne and Peter Whittingham. None of these players were able to go straight into the starting line-up with only Whittingham having made any impact at all to the side.

It seems that money is again due to be tight come the transfer window, with much of the Bluebirds’ spare cash used to pay larger wages this term or spent on legal fees fighting the impending court case against the irksome Langston corporation.

Ridsdale told Sky Sports:

‘We know how difficult it is to compete with other clubs in the Championship, especially with their parachute payments, and many of them have an average of 10,000 more gate receipts than us, but we will try our best to compete.’

‘We have a very clear plan that has been agreed by the club and the council. Plans have been approved by the council and the new stadium should be in place for spring 2009.’

‘On the football side, we will only spend what we can afford,’

There may be a small amount available and Jones (or his replacement) would be able to raise more funds via the sale of players like Steve Thompson (transfer-listed), Warren Feeney (impressing on loan with Swansea City or Jason Byrne.

The current squad is far more capable than the league table suggests, however, we would need perhaps two players in January to make a decent fist of the season, barring a remarkable turn-around. A shame therefore, that the £5m from the sale of Michael Chopra, has already been budgetted for paying for the big names of Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – both of whom failing to make much of an impression or justify their wages.
