Rangers To Return For Cardiff City’s Loovens?

Cardiff City started the season with just the expected loss of Aaron Ramsey from the first team squad since last season after fending off interest in several players from other clubs.

One such player is defender Glenn Loovens, out of contract in a year and reluctant to extend his deal. Rangers admitted an interest in the commanding Dutchman but were put off by the Bluebirds refusal to talk until a fee of £3m was mentioned.

Bougherra joined from Charlton Athletic to bolster the defensive options at Ibrox. However, Rangers were unexpectedly knocked out of the Champions League last week, and have now lost star centre-back Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa in a £7m deal meaning they are again a defender short.

The financial ramifications of the Champs league exit should not be underestimated, and Loovens may not be so tempted by a move to the SPL without top class European action. It seems likely that Rangers will return with a bid, or plan to strike a pre-contract deal in January though other clubs will surely also be interested from Loovens’ preferred destination – the Premiership.

Cardiff City have Darren Purse to partner Johnson in defence, while youngster Darren Dennehy is highly rated.
