Minor trouble at Cardiff vs Spurs

Cardiff City’s respectable 0-0 draw with Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur should not be overshadowed by reports of a ‘riot’ reported following yesterday’s contest.


Fears rose amongst reports of violent behaviour akin to that seen following Cardiff City’s 2-1 victory over high-flying Leeds United back in January 2002.

With 10-15 minutes remaining in yesterday’s match, some disturbance broke out in the away section of Ninian Park. Some Tottenham Hotspur fans became tangled with a mixture of stewards and riot police but the trouble was quickly quelled amid chants of ‘sit down and behave yourselves’ from the City fans.

Moments later, a bright red flare was lit by a home fan in the Grange End terrace i.e. the same stand as the away fans. Some pushing and gesturing towards the Spurs fans ensued but the situation quietened almost immediately and never escalated out of hand. The flare was thrown from the home section but etinguished quickly and Cardiff City will surely be reviewing their safety policy as to how the midless fan managed to smuggle the banned flare inside.

Neither set of fans will be proud of their actions although it must be stressed that the only disturbance came from a very small number on either side. Six arrests were made following the game on public order offences.




A memorable day on the pitch for City with only a minor disturbance to take away from the football. The trouble was significantly less than when Wolverhampton Wanderers visited Ninian Park this season and should not be making headlines following the game.
