Cardiff City’s respectable 0-0 draw with Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur should not be overshadowed by reports of a ‘riot’ reported following yesterday’s contest.
Fears rose amongst reports of violent behaviour akin to that seen following Cardiff City’s 2-1 victory over high-flying Leeds United back in January 2002.
With 10-15 minutes remaining in yesterday’s match, some disturbance broke out in the away section of Ninian Park. Some Tottenham Hotspur fans became tangled with a mixture of stewards and riot police but the trouble was quickly quelled amid chants of ‘sit down and behave yourselves’ from the City fans.
Moments later, a bright red flare was lit by a home fan in the Grange End terrace i.e. the same stand as the away fans. Some pushing and gesturing towards the Spurs fans ensued but the situation quietened almost immediately and never escalated out of hand. The flare was thrown from the home section but etinguished quickly and Cardiff City will surely be reviewing their safety policy as to how the midless fan managed to smuggle the banned flare inside.
Neither set of fans will be proud of their actions although it must be stressed that the only disturbance came from a very small number on either side. Six arrests were made following the game on public order offences.
A memorable day on the pitch for City with only a minor disturbance to take away from the football. The trouble was significantly less than when Wolverhampton Wanderers visited Ninian Park this season and should not be making headlines following the game.

A glass bottle was thrown at the away fans from the Grange end along with coins and eventually the flare after the smoke had filled the stand, a fight broke out with a steward in the same section. I didnt hear any chants of sit down and behave yourself but i did hear the cardiff fans “hissing to emulate the gas chambers” and chants of Hitler F**ked you up the trouble in the away end broke out after the club announced away fans would have to stay up to 30mins behind after the match they surged foward and ended up at the front where cardiff fans in the west stand were gesturing for them to come across. Not really anything for either club to be proud of i think you will agree.
To be fair Truth, the disturbance was far more significant in the Spurs end. One idiot in the city end but i’ve seen worse at Under 11s games! There will be strict regulations on travelling City fans via our supporters groups and there will be no trouble.
The great thing about cardiff being 8th in the championship is that thye will never grace the Prem.. Hopefully for footballs sake they will never ..ever make it
Cardiff have one of the lower arrest rates in the Championship and the figures are dwarfed by all of those in the Premiership. Its only the press and the naive who talk about these problems at Cardiff
look we all know cardiff have the best hooligan rep in the english leagues its just because we have low arresrts you dont hear much about us….fair enough a flair was fun and every loved it…….but throwin coins and a glass bottle….it could of hurt a child…. and everyone seems to blame cardiff wheras their fans contriubted to the problem by provocking them
