Cardiff City midfielder Gavin Rae is an important member of our starting XI, playing in a defensive role and breaking up opposition attacks and possession. His partnership with Joe Ledley in midfield has flourished and we look a well-balanced team and more creative of late.

One thing missing from Rae’s game however is goals. he is yet to score this season but crashed a fierce drive into the crossbar against Barnsley – the frame was shaking for 30 seconds afterwards. Then against Doncaster he crossed for Chopra’s opening goal when half the ground was urging him to shoot. A later shot was saved by Neil Sullivan.

Rae has spoken out of his desire to get on the scoresheet and after seeing Eddie Johnson break his duck – Rae is even more determined. He told the SW Echo:

‘I`d love to score one. I`ve never finished a season with less than four. I had a decent chance against Doncaster, but their goalkeeper made a good save.’

‘I`m working to get into the right positions to score and I`ll keep doing that. If the chance comes I`ll do everything I can to take it.’

Four goals between now and the end of the season seems a huge ask of Gavin Rae, and one he almost certainly will not make. However his work-rate, determination and overall performances have been very good and he is deserving of a break. Don’t be expecting a hat-trick any time soon, but a goal for Gavin Rae would be most welcome for the team, fans and the player himself.
