January was always going to be a busy month with such competition in the leagues and such a limited window for signing re-inforcements. We at Cardiff City had it tougher than most in that we always knew we would not be adding to the squad, yet we lived in fear that any of the club’s top stars could have been sold at any moment. At it turned out, only Chris Gunter moved on – a big move to Tottenham Hotspur where he will surely flourish.
However that fear is now all gone and we anticipate the rest of the season with renewed hope and even optimism. There were however a number of past players on the move during January. Here’s just a few:
Perhaps the biggest transfer news was the move of former number 1 Neil Alexander to Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers. Ales joined Ipswich Town in the summer but clearly couldn’t turn down such a chance. Good luck to him.
Former midfield general Graham Kavanagh was placed on the transfer list by Roy Keane at Sunderland, he’s joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan and will add creativity and bite to their midfield.
Ndumbu-Nsungu (Dave) joined former club Darlington from Gillingham, Simon Walton moved to Hull City from QPR, Paul Brayson was released by York, Phil Mulryne released by King’s Lynn FC while Jeff Whitley has re-joined Wrexham after recovering from alcohol issues.
There was much talk about former Cardiff City strikers with Alan Lee (Ipswich Town) and Robert Earnshaw (Derby County) both linked with various clubs. Both however remained where they were.
Following the progress of former Bluebirds, Cardiff City fans can hardly notice the improvements in destination clubs. Whilst many of the players on the move in this transfer window were not big players for Cardiff, it’s been good to see the likes of Gabbidon, Collins, Earnshaw, Chopra, Kavanagh, Jerome, Gunter and even Koumas playing in the Premiership. We may even get a chance to see the current crop of Bluebirds playing there next season. We can dream.
