Cardiff City’s imposing Dutch centre-back has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a fractured bone in his foot during the midweek draw with Southampton.

Loovens will now be sidelined until the end of Cardiff’s campaign even if they reach the play-offs and will be disappointed to lose such an important player during the crucial run-in.

The injury leaves Cardiff with just Roger Johnson and Darren Purse as recognised centre-backs at the club. Kevin McNaughton has filled in admirably in recent weeks but is not built to be a centre-half and was turned by Giles Barnes yesterday for Derby’s second goal.

Cardiff manager Dave Jones may well decide to bring in an emergency loan player as cover, although many clubs are reluctant to let their players leave.

Jones has already been linked with potential moves for Liam Ridgewell of Aston Villa and former Cardiff star James Collins, now at West Ham.
