Cardiff City have opened talks with midfielder Riccy Scimeca about extending his current contract – which would end at the close of this season.

Scimeca has struggled enormously with injuries for the past year, a recurrent groin problem as well asan infection following surgery caused him to question if he would ever play again.

However, after over a year out, Scimeca has returned to full training with no adverse effects and has featured for the first team – looking quietly effective though not yet back to his best.

Scimeca revealed to the SW Echo that he has held preliminary talks over an extension to his current deal. Riccy wants to repay the faith and encouragement given to him by the club and would love to begin next season as a Bluebirds player:

‘There are some outstanding players here and there is a real chance of achieving something big. I have sat down briefly with the manager and Peter Ridsdale.’

‘They said they want me to stay and certainly I want to play for Cardiff next season and beyond. I was told there is nothing to prove football-wise, but it`s fair to say I have to prove my fitness in the long term.’

“I am happy to do that over the remaining games of the season.’

With Stephen McPhail, Gavin Rae, Aaron Ramsey, Darcy Blake and Joe Ledley all available to play central midfield, that is a strong area for Cardiff City. However Scimeca adds a powerful presence and good leadership qualities. We have undoubtedly missed him and hope to have him on top form in a Bluebirds shirt again.
