Cardiff City’s Gyepes ‘Takes One For The Team’

Cardiff City’s in form defender Gabor Gyepes was shown a straight red card last night for a bizarre tackle from behind, more usually seen on a scrum half making a break.

James Vaughan looked offside after latching on to Solano’s through ball, however, the flag stayed down and with Vaughan bearing down on goal – Gyepes took the split second decision to bring him down outside the area. A straight red card with no arguments.

Admittedly I felt we had the better chance to win if Gyepes stayed on the field, even if Vaughan has scored. The thought of Capaldi and Quinn as the centre-halves filled (and still does) me with dread but I was suprised at how well they coped with Howard, Vaughan and co. A real team performance, but special credit must go to those players who filled in admirably in unfamiliar positions.

Gyepes has been our third choice centre-half for much of this season, but has been in good form of late. He will now face an automatic 3 match ban, which of course will mean he misses the Swansea City clash on Saturday.

The current injuries to Hudson, Gerrard, McNaughton, Blake and Kennedy means our back-line will be severely depleted and we must hope that at the very least one of the regular centre-halves is fit in time to play.

Whilst Gyepes undoubtedly ‘took one for the team’ last night, you cant help wondering whether the ‘bigger picture’ might have seen him stay on the field, and available for selection in the upcoming games despite the likelihood of James Vaughan equalising. Not that you’d find many fans complaining last night…..
