Cardiff City’s Five Stars: Can We Keep Them?

Cardiff City have for some time now been a selling club, forced to part with their brightest talent to balance the books and claw their way back towards the black.


Now however, those times appear to be relenting and we are no longer forced to sell. It is clear though, that we will sell players, but at a better price than we used to have to accept.


There are 5 players who, to my mind, are the stars of our squad. Plenty of players like Gavin Rae, Stephen McPhail, Peter Whittingham etc are good players who have performed important roles for us – but could be replaced.


These players are: Roger Johnson, Glenn Loovens, Kevin McNaughton, Joe Ledley and Aaron Ramsey. All enjoyed a superb season, and all are still young and improving.


Peter Ridsdale recently told the Echo:


“The ideal scenario is for us to keep our players, but that is not something which is likely.

“I would expect some comings and goings in the summer, but we would do that in the best way possible to make sure we are even stronger at the start of next season than we were when we finished this one.”



Our most sellable assets, are of course the ones we would most like to keep. All the other players in our squad could be replaced for the right fee but Cardiff City fans must be resigned to losing some of the best players also.


Aaron Ramsey looks almost certain to leave, with Manchester United or Arsenal his most likely destination. If we can keep the other 4 ‘stars’, bring in 2 good strikers and keep or replace the other members of the squad – we will have a decent shot at promotion. Add to that an attacking midfielder and a full-back – it could be an excellent season next year.


We as supporters do not know the full extent of the finances, I’d be prepared to allow Ramsey to leave (for a hefty fee of course) if we can keep hold of Joe Ledley – but then, it’s not really up to us is it?!?
