Cardiff City conceded another soft goal from a corner on Saturday when Wes Morgan leapt above Hudson to direct a powerful effort past Heaton for Nottingham Forest. Prior to that, former Bluebird Steve Thompson squeezed an even more disappointing header inside the near post to give Burnley a precious point.
We just can’t afford to continue in this way and must do much better defending the set piece. Neither Heaton or Marshall are specialists in collecting crosses but it’s bitterly disappointing to concede these goals.
With Bothroyd, Parkin, Olofinjana and Quinn all over six foot, in addition to the centre-back pairing of Keinan and Hudson – Cardiff City have a clear height advantage yet were once again undone.
What is even more frustrating is that we look absolutely no threat in the opposition area from corners! With Bellamy, Burke and co. we win a great deal of corners, but I can’t remember us scoring many.
Hudson, Gyepes, McNaughton, Blake and Keinan are all yet to score this season, while Lee Naylor has two long range efforts to his name. Paul Quinn came close against Swansea City but again is yet to score in a Bluebirds shirt.
Gabor Gyepes scored against Watford after a short corner routine from Bellamy and Seyi Olofinjana did get a header from a corner against parent club Hull City early in the season – but I’m struggling to think of many more. It’s disappointing, especially when the likes of Scott Young and Roger Johnson used to routinely bag 8-10 such goals per season.
More work is needed to cut out the goals at our end, and to make more of the numerous opportunities at the other. Cardiff City need to be a lot wiser and more ruthless if we are to be promoted, the Championship is just not forgiving enough for us to keep missing out as others profit.
