Cardiff City manager Dave Jones has revealed that cultured midfielder Jason Koumas is some way behind his team-mates in terms of fitness, but will not be rushed and risk picking up an injury.

The Bluebirds are desperately short of numbers, and a fit Jason Koumas would certainly be pushing for a starting berth in the team. However, the Welshman on-loan from Wigan Athletic has barely played over the past seasons and is desperately short of fitness.

Jones told the SW Echo:

‘I could have comfortably put Koumas on the bench but he`s not ready. What`s the point of pushing him and possibly losing him for four to five weeks?’

‘He is behind on training but we will get him up to speed.’

Whilst the other players have been traing with balls, cones and in 8-on-8 matches, Koumas has been working alone with fitness coach Alex Armstrong and physio Sean Connelly. He has been alternating with intensive sprint training, and endurance work.

Unfortunately, Koumas will not be ready to face Burton Albion in the League Cup, this would have been a perfect opportunity to build up gametime but JK should be ready for bench duty in the home clash against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, 21 August.
