Cardiff City were dealt a blow last night with the news that rising star Adam Matthews was withdrawn at half time during the Wales U21s game – which they subsequently lost to Bosnia U21s.

Matthews was available for the youngsters after appearing as an unused substitute for the Senior side for the 3-0 demolition of Scotland. However, he took a kick to the ankle and was substituted, making him a doubt for Saturday`s away clash at Barnsley.

The loss of Matthews is a big blow after his solid defensive play, and bursting runs forward. His energy has been important in helping Chris Burke`s season and Matthews is improving all the time.

Whilst Matthews is a loss, Cardiff City fans will be comforted no end to see that the replacement at right-back could be no other than Kevin McNaughton – the Scottish defender back in contention after missing the entire season to date. He has no come through 2 reserve team games unscathed and will compete with fellow Scot Paul Quinn should Matthews be ruled out.
