Cardiff City midfielder Stephen McPhail will not be available to take up his customary place amongst the substitutes for the next couple of weeks after suffering a knee injury in the reserves’ 1-0 win against Swindon Town.

Until fairly recently, McPhail was indispensible to the side and started every game for the Bluebirds. However, since losing form and getting set off against Swansea City – McPhail has cut a forlorn figure on the sidelines and rarely gets any action for the first team – since then we are also unbeaten. He has made a couple of late substitute appearances, making one costly error to gift Birmingham City a late late equaliser at St Andrews.

Ledley and Rae have been in superb form in central midfield of late but having McPhail on the bench is fortunate for most Championship managers. He will now miss out for the next 2 weeks and we are decidedly short of cover in that area. Riccy Scimeca seems a likely candidate to provide back-up but he has not played much football in the past 2 years. Youngster Darcy Blake is the other option available to Dave Jones.

Its a telling sign that an injury to Stephen McPhail, former midfield lynchpin and regular captain is a cause of little or no concern to Cardiff City fans. Last season – it would have been panic time…
