Cardiff City FC have opted to bring in a new backroom team to assist new manager Malky Mackay with experienced trio Terry Burton, Alex Armstrong and Paul Wilkinson free to find new employment and put on ‘gardening leave’ by the club.

Former Bluebirds striker Jay Bothroyd reacted with surprise to the news and spoke out in support of Burton:

‘Can’t believe ccfc has put Terry burton on gardening leave he is one of the best coaches in the league if not the best. !!!’

Burton outlasted Dave Jones at the club, and is vastly experienced as an assistant manager and coach. He was credited with the vast majority of the coaching burden, and the tactical plans used by Jones, working closely with the players on a day-to-day basis.

Mackay was always likely to bring in his own choice as number 2, but Burton’s experience would have been seen as a positive, especially when former assistant Sean Dyche was appointed to the Watford managerial position.

Burton will have little trouble finding another job, though may instead opt to take a year out receiving full pay from Cardiff City – as per his contract.
