Cardiff City have established themselves as a solid Championship outfit over the last few years and have become perennial play-off contenders who fall just short year after year. The financial turmoil behind the scenes has hindered progress while in truth it is only improved financial planning and some fantastic emerging talent (Gunter, Ramsey, Jerome) that has kept the club afloat.
However, this season has already shown a drastic improvement in some circumstances. By no means are we playing at the top of our game but finances are far better, the new stadium looms over old Ninian Park, state-of-the-art training facilities are available and we have become resilient and very difficult to beat. Derby County and Watford are two recent Premiership sides with ambitions to return quickly, however, both found that despite taking the lead at home – they could manage just a point apiece against the Bluebirds.
New striker Jay Bothroyd is loving life with the Bluebirds and after netting a well-finished opener against Coventry City he then scored a brace last night to secure a point against Watford and his partnership with Ross McCormack is showing a great deal of potential. Bothroyd though is not aiming for a play-off spot and believes automatic promotion is within reach – he told the SW Echo:
“There has been a lot of talk about play-offs, but we are aiming higher than that. Our big target is automatic promotion to the Premier League.’
“We have a great squad, a great manager, the new training ground, a new stadium on the way and a desire to strike promotion gold.’
