Wigan Fan’s View On Cardiff City Recruit Bent

Cardiff City new signing Marcus Bent will head off to Portugal with the rest of the Bluebirds squad. We headed over to Vital Wigan to get the views of a Latics fan Worbo after Bent spent last season on loan at the JJB Stadium:

Your thoughts on Marcus Bent?

Marcus Bent didn`t look fit or interested when he first came to Wigan last August and it took him a while to settle in, we played Birmingham away in October and Benty scored two goals, we lost 3-2 but that game seemed to give him some confidence.

He played a blinder against Blackburn in December scoring a hat-trick, the last goals he scored for us.
He finished the season as top scorer for the Latics with the grand total of 7, 5 of these coming in two matches, so he wasn`t prolific for us

He missed some guilt edge chances one in the last minute of the FA Cup tie at home to Chelsea when he was clean through and blazed over the bar

Would you have signed him permanently?

No in a straight answer, he looked a little out of his depth in the Premier League to be honest.

Can Bent do a good job for Cardiff City?

The Championship is probably more his level and he works his socks off, he is quick and strong and not afraid to shoot, more often that not for us though he was off target, but like I said the Championship is more his level and he will score for you I am sure.

If we had been relegated I would have signed him without hesitation.

Any particular strengths or weaknesses?

He is strong, fast and works hard for the team but can be hit or miss in front of goal, the trouble with Premier League defenders they are so quick and close down players, this tended to make Benty panic a little in front of goal when he had time and he snatched at chances

Is £1m a fair price?

You`ll probably get value for money, he`s only 30 so got a few years left in him yet.

Many thanks to Worbo for his views. Bent certainly fits the bill as a powerful, hard-working striker but we really could do with someone who can score goals as well. Apologies to Steve Thompson!
