Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham was on hand to meet Craig Bellamy’s inviting cross to hit the third goal of a 3-0 win over Portsmouth on Saturday, the 50th goal of his Bluebirds career.

The former Aston Villa man was never likely to match his remarkable goalscoring feat of last season, and has been used in a variety of midfield roles this season but despite starting slowly, Whitts has contributed a number of goals and hit a good streak of late – Saturday’s goal was his fourth in 6 games, an outstanding feat for a midfielder.

Whittingham now has 42 league goals for City since joining for £350k, with a further 4 goals in each of the FA Cup and the League Cup. He is an influential and consistent performer in the Bluebirds midfield four having returned to form in emphatic fashion following a disappointing campaign season before last.

He is surely one of our most valuable assets, and has the quality and poise to play in the Premiership – hopefully as a Cardiff City player next season….

Well done Peter Whittingham – hopefully more to come this season!
