Chris Konopka is this week on trial with Cardiff City. The 21 year old former Providence College goalkeeper is 6 foot 5 and an imposing figure while Dave Jones is said to favour more commanding ‘keepers than current Cardiff No 1 Neil Alexander.

Konopka’s agent Patrick McCabe confirmed Cardiff City’s interest in his client but confirmed there were other clubs interested in the stopper:

‘He is excited about this opportunity and we should know more as the week progresses, but Cardiff is very high on him.’

‘Right now, we’re going to look at this opportunity,’ McCabe told ‘Yanks Abroad’. ‘After the trial is over, we’ll see how things are at that point.’

‘If it doesn’t work out, there are other possibilities, but we’re not thinking about that now.’

Konopka is obtaining dual nationality between USA and Poland so would not require a work permit to play in Britain.

Konopka’s trial may have serious implications for Neil Alexander, the Scot last week turning down a contract offer from the Bluebirds in a move described as a ‘gamble’ by Dave Jones. Irish ‘keeper David Forde is joining the Bluebirds in January but former Arsenal trainee Mark Howard is out of favour at Cardiff. Cardiff’s current wage structure would not allow for 4 goalkeepers on the books and any signing of Chris Konopka could mean a January exit for Alexander, out of contract in the summer, with Coventry City known to be interested.
