Thommo Set For Another Cardiff City Re-Birth ?!

Cardiff City striker Steve Thompson started up-front in our Championship opener against Southampton on Saturday – to the suprise of many. In fact, few would have expected Thommo to still be a Bluebird having been on the transfer list well over a year now.


But for a freak banana-boat accident, Thompson would have moved on and would have missed out on two trips to Wembley and an FA Cup runners-up accolade. He is a hard worker, puts himself around aggressively but will always struggle unless he improves his goals ratio.


When he does score, they are crackers. Debut goals against Burnley as well as an excellent long range effort away at Blackpool last season stand out but they are too few and far between.


Comments made by Thompson in the Scottish media were taken out of context and Dave Jones insists there is no rift with Thommo and he remains a part of the squad. Well liked by players and supporters – if only he could hit the net more often…!


On Saturday, Thommo did not enjoy the best game but had a chance, one real chance all game which he duly tucked away. However, it was the manner that impressed with a cool side-foot from 16 yards with enough curl to beat Davis. Every person there could see what it meant to him, and every player in turn congratulated the big man.


It looked for all the world like he did that every game, that there was no pressure on the shot. What Thompson could learn from was the Southampton goal by David McGoldrick. A messy goal, forced home from a few yard by good strength and anticipation. A few more goals like that for Thommo would make a huge difference.


Bothroyd seems likely to partner McCormack up-front, but Dave Jones would be hard pushed to justify dropping a goal-scoring striker – so for now at least Steve Thompson should lead the line for Cardiff City.
