Cardiff City have swooped to sign left-sided Simon Lappin from Norwich City as cover for the injured Andrew Taylor. Lappin was well-known in the Championship as a cultured left-footer, usually deployed in midfield but he has struggled for opportunities in the Premiership and barely featured over the previous 2 years.

Cardiff City fans have special cause to remember Lappin as he took advantage of one of just a number of spectacular goalkeeping errors that plagued us in the years between Neil Alexander and David Marhsall. Ross Turnbull, Peter Enckelman and Dimi ‘the drop’ Konstantopoulos were the main protagonists of those clangers and Turnbull gifted a goal to Lappin back in 2007.

Lappin has only ever scored two goals in over 100 appearances in the English league system and his effort from 30 yards is surely well remembered by him. That is was gifted on a plate by a woeful Turnbull attempted clearance is perhaps less well engrained in his memory but it was a backpass from Gunter down the City right that saw Turnbull compeltely mishit his kick and Lappin duly plonked the ball iunto the empty net from 30 yards. Turnbull, despite his shocking performances for us, is now at European Champions Chelsea.

City managed to overcome Turnbull’s mistake that day and secured a 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Peter Whittingham and Roger Johnson. Hopefully Lappin will go on to enjoy his time at Cardiff City and help us towards a few more victories….
