Press reports are today suggesting that Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham is a top transfer target for our Championship rivals Portsmouth with the South Coast outfit preparing a bid for the former Aston Villa midfielder.

Whittingham is primarily a left-sided midfielder, though does not have the pace or trickery to be an out-and-out winger. He is however, a classy individual with superb passing ability and ability to create chances.

Following his goalscoring exploits of the 2009/10 season, Whittingham was last season used in a less familiar central midfield role given the lack of options in that position. Many fans were quick to point out his faults, but Whittingham performed an important role for the team, clearly asked by Dave Jones to drop deep, receive possession and distribute simply when possible. Much of this owed to the poor distribution of Seyi Olofinjana so Whittingham impressed in an unfamiliar position – also not helped by a lack of midfield balance.

Malky mackay has already signed Craig Conway, whose best position is also on the left wing. However, Whittingham is a highly talented player, also experienced at this level. With doubts over Stephen McPhail’s contribution over the past two seasons – losing Whittingham would be a huge blow, and despite his calm and relaxed attitude – he is a big part of Cardiff City FC and has another importnat role to fulfil this coming season.

I agree, but if his name gets linked to any more clubs I think it’s fair to say his agent is open to offers. Would be a shame for us to lose him, not sure Porstmouth would appeal too much anyway?!
