Ross McCormack`s much publicised move away from Cardiff City took a change in direction this afternoon after it emerged a new club has joined the chase for his signature. Portsmouth are the interested club with media reports varying between interest and a firm bid lodged.

Pompey lost Peter Crouch to Tottenham Hotspur and while McCormack is no like-for-like replacement – he is a realistic target for the Fratton Park outfit who are looking to re-invest little of the transfer fees they have received in recent times.

Whether this will spark Phil Brown into action remains unknown. His valuation of McCormack is around the £2m mark though that interest was certain to be rejected by Ridsdale who is holding out for close to double that figure.

It is also conceivable that McCormack would reject a move to Portsmouth if he was not assured of first team action. That is the principal reason behind his looking elsewhere and he has already stated a move to the Championship is an option to avoid sitting on the bench.
