Neil was out of contract and Dave Jones has now confirmed that Neil can try to find himself another club for next season. Cox was widely expected to be awarded a 1 year extension to his current deal following a number of strong displays from the dependable defender stepping in for either Purse or Loovens and never letting the side down. Cox made 21 (+6) appearances for City and was an important and influential member of the dressing room. He also took over the captaincy when Purse was unavailable.

Many thanks to Coxy for his time with us and our most impressive season in many years. Had Cox been a year younger I am sure he would have earned a new deal but at 34 he was always going to struggle with the pace of the Championship.

Cox’s release increases speculation into Dave Jones’ interest in Mikkel Bischoff, the Danish centre-back, released by Manchester City for whom Jones made an enquiry last summer. Bischoff spent last season on loan to Wolves and may fit the bill as a back-up to the first choice defensive partnership of Purse/Loovens.

I am amased at the signings in the last 12 months. Especially when I read you have to cut the playing staff last close season due to financial preoblems.

I’m surprised that coxy is still around. I don’t think he’ll get another contract now, unless he drops a few divisions.
