Cardiff City will welcome back Stephen McPhail to the first team squad as we prepare to face under-performing Nottingham Forest on New Years Eve.

The Irishman had been unavailable for several weeks following an episode of his longstanding illness. McPhail suffers from Sj√∂gren’s syndrome, which can manifest with fatigue and joint pain. It is a condition which can be managed, and has been successfully throughout McPhail’s 5 year stay in South Wales.

For the first time, McPhail has not been first choice in midfield this season, despite City playing with three in central midfield. Gunnarsson, Kiss and the lynchpin Peter Whittingham have forged a good understanding while teenager Joe Ralls has deputised to good effect.

McPhail’s experience and quality will be a huge asset not that he has regained fitness and while he is unlikely to start against Forest – he is a great squad player to have around and will hopefully be able to force himself into contention over the coming weeks.
