Matthews Praise For Cardiff City Team-mates

Cardiff City have turned to a promising young player to fill the gap left by Capaldi’s suspension and injuries to Kennedy and McNaughton. Adam Matthews is a highly regarding young academy product and has stepped up manfully to impress with his composed and energetic displays at right-back.

Cardiff City have a good history af turning out high quality young players from the academy. The likes of Ledley, Gunter, Jerome, Ramsey and Blake have broken through of late and Adam Matthews is next of the production line – with many tipping him to eclipse the others.

For a 17 year old to step up so easily to Championship football is extremely impressive. He has looked calm, collected and shown tremendous quality and aptitude. Matthews himself is enjoying it and has thanked his team-mates for their support and guidance He singled out fellow Welsh youngster Joe Ledley for special thanks. Adam told the CCFC Official website:

‘Joe has helped me a lot, talking to me on and off the pitch. But all the boys in the dressing room have been great. I was nervous to start with, but they’ve all been great with me me if I’ve made a mistake.’

‘Neal Ardley and Geraint Twose at the Academy have also been a fantastic help.’

It has undoubtedly been easier for Matthews to emerge in a team doing well and brimming with confidence. He was the man called on by Dave Jones instead of the more experienced Blake or Comminges. It has been clear to see the likes of Hudson, Gerrard and Ledley giving constant advice and encouragement to Matthews – though he himself has displayed a willingness to work hard and get forward too.

Matthews will surely be given a break when McNaughton returns but he has shown himself capable of playing at this level and has a great deal of potential. Dave Jones has nurtured previous young talent and won’t place too strong demands on the 17 year old. Nevertheless, Cardiff City fans will be looking forward to seeing Matthews in action throughout the season.
