Leeds United 0-1 Cardiff City

New season, same scoreline and another victory over Leeds.

There was a suprise in the Cardiff line-up with Malvin Kamara taking the wide-right berth expected to have been filled by Flood.

After a relatively slow start, the game opened up into a lively and open affair with City passing nicely and setting up several efforts for the impressive Michael Chopra. Leeds were also attacking and caused problems in particular with dangerous set-plays from the left boot of American Eddie Lewis. One such cross, after Loovens had fouled Blake on 19 minutes, was missed by Alexander and was met by Kilgallon but he headed over when he could have done better.

Leeds thought they had a penalty just before half time after a goalmouth scramble and the ball was blocked by McNaughton’s arm but the referee was not impressed.


Things got more physical in the second half and Flood was brought on for Kamara to add more mettle but Kamara was lively looking pacy and linking well with McNaughton also chipping a shot narrowly wide.

Both teams had half-chances but no clear cut opportunities and neither side looked like taking any risks but when Leeds won a corner in the 82nd minute they sent up Kilgallon and Butler but Flood robbed Kilgallon on the edge of the City area and broke quickly. Flood found Chopra on the left who showed fantastic vision and precision to play an enticing ball behind the covering defender and in front of Warner where WILLO FLOOD had continued his run and slid in to finish. A breathtaking break, great goal and a fantastic result.

Captain Darren Purse was sent off for violent conduct as the game moved into injury time and will be looking at a prospective 3 match ban but Roger Johnson looked calm and a more-than-capable replacement. Darcy Blake came on for Chopra to finish at right-back as City looked to close the game.

4 games in, 3 wins and a draw and City are sitting pretty at the top of the Championship, level on points and goal difference with Birmingham City having played Leeds, West Brom and Coventry all of whom are expected to be top 6 come the end of the season. There’s no need to get carried away yet, but the results and performances thus far look extremely promising.
