The draw for the second round of the English Football League Cup took place earlier this afternoon.

Drawn live on Sky Sports following the culmination of the final first round tie of the week between Bury and Sunderland (Grimsby v Derby subject to rearranged fixture), the Cup now welcomes the majority of Premier League teams not completing in Europe.

European competing sides will join at the third round stage as always.

The draw was seeded and split north/south.

The second round ties are set for the week commencing August 21.

Northern Section:

Carlisle v Sunderland
Bolton Wanderers v Sheffield Wednesday
Accrington Stanley v West Bromwich Albion
Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest
Leeds United v Newport County
Stoke City v Rochdale
Huddersfield Town v Rotherham United
Middlesbrough v Scunthorpe United
Doncaster Rovers v Hull City
Blackburn Rovers v Burnley
Sheffield United v Leicester City
Aston Villa v Wigan Athletic
Barnsley v Derby County or Grimsby Town

Southern section:

QPR v Brentford
Crystal Palace v Ipswich Town
Watford v Bristol City
Norwich City v Charlton Athletic
Cheltenham Town v West Ham United
Brighton & Hove Albion v Barnet
Cardiff City v Burton Albion
Southampton v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Fulham v Bristol Rovers
Milton Keynes Dons v Swansea City
Birmingham City v Bournemouth
Reading v Millwall

With some ties called wrongly for a second time in a row, the above list should be accurate – I hope – others are still reporting that West Ham are at home.

Quite a farce this second round draw turned out to be as was the first round draw.In some ways it makes entertaining viewing if comedy is your interest.Keep it simple,we have had decades, many many years of experience simply pulling a the first ball as the home team followed by the next ball as the away team,it’s an easy process, how can they get it so wrong two times running, let us all hope it’s a case of third time lucky.
