Cardiff City fans have had precious little to laugh about over the past few weeks but given the acceptance over a summer of possible departures and squad re-building – you have to appreciate the early start to the silly season and the opportunities for discussion it brings.

One such report is that Sunderland are hoping to sign Roger Johnson for £3m.

Let’s first consider that Sunderland are not yet safe from relegation to the Championship – an unthinkable step for chairman Niall Quinn and while Roger may be a top target whichever diveision – it seems unlikely he would be actively pursuing targets without knowing.

Add to that Ricky Sbragia’s precarious position, possibly linked to relegation though the former number 2 has suggested he may still be axed even if the Black Cats are saved from the drop. With the manager’s position under threat, few Chairmen would splash out money regardless. Does he trust Sbragia with next season’s budget? Would a new manager want Roger?

Add to that the fee. £3m. We have offloaded the likes of Earnshaw, Gabbidon and Loovens for similar fees but Roger is probably worth more than all three. We turned down a bid of £4.5m from West Brom just a year ago – following another impressive season, and being named in the PFA team of the year – I see no reason why Johnson’s valuation will have decreased!

Silly season is upon us. Expect a multitude of rumours surrounding Ledley, Johnson, Purse, Whittingham, McPhail, Parry, McCormack – all of whom could depart. The only way the gossip will stop is if we sell them….
