Cardiff City manager Dave Jones had to console on-loan Fulham striker Eddie Johnson after subsituting the USA man, himself only having come on as a substitute!

Johnson replaced the crocked Michael Chopra after half an hour for the Bluebirds, we were already 2-0 up at that stage and Johnson linked up with Bothroyd in attack. I felt at the time McPhail would come on with Ledley switching to left wing and Parry to attack. Jones opted to give Johnson another chance but he’s yet to find the net for Cardiff City and looks woefully short of confidence in the area.

As City looked to close the game out, Jones decided to throw on an extra midfielder to counter-act Ipswich’s 4-3-2 formation where they used a 3 man midfield following Thatcher’s red card. McPhail was the man to come on, with a striker sacrificed – Eddie Johnson.

Bothroyd had an impressive game, and looks a bargain at the £300k we paid for him. Maintaining his form has to be the goal, but he’s now hit 2 in 2 games and shown some brilliant touches. I agree with the decision to take Eddie off, it was the right call and there’s little room for sentiment in football – you can’t leave him on so as not to hurt his feelings!

Jones told the SW Echo:

“It was purely a tactical decision, nothing to do with Eddie`s performance,” said the Bluebirds boss.”

“The lad was gutted, but I spoke to him after the match and he understands the situation.”

“It`s hard for players to go on and then come off again, there`s no doubt about that.”

must have been hard to take as the subbed sub, can’t understand why he was brought on if the tactics were set to be changed!
