Irish Interest In Cardiff Flop Byrne

Cardiff City paid around £75k for the services of a proven goalscorer from Shelbourne in the Eircom league around this time last year.

Byrne came with a good reputation, as a goalscorer and something we were lacking and relying on Michael Chopra solely for. He made a good start, firing the winner in a 2-1 away win at Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, as far as goals go – that was it.

Cardiff fans were banned from that game, so no City supporter has seen a league goal from the striker! He has made 10 appearances, and, that goal aside, made absolutely no impression.

He has barely been mentioned this season and didnt get a look in even before Fowler, Hasselbaink and Thompson were match fit.

Injuries at key moments have also hindered Byrne’s chances, but his signing now appears an extraordinary mistake and even Dave Jones seems to have accepted that now.

Bohemians of the Eircom league, are trying to bring Byrne back to his homeland where he is a good player and was top scorer in the league an impressive 4 years running outshining players like Shane Long at Reading. Byrne is well known to new Bohs manager Pat Fenlon having played under him at Shelbourne before Fenlon accepted Cardiff City’s bid for him.
