Cardiff City were leading 1-0 when two of the elder statemen on the pitch were competing for possession midway into the Blackpool half and out on the City right. Bellamy showed impressive guile to hold off one defender, before knocking the ball through Evatt’s legs.

Evatt, who struggled throughout and desperately lacks pace, had decided he wasn’t going to win that race, and without even attempting to turn he blocked Bellamy’s path and conceded the free-kick. Presumably, the experienced Evatt had come to the conclusion that, while a reasonably dangerous position for his side – conceding the free-kick and a chance for the Bluebirds to cross the ball was worth it…

Clearly Evatt got that wrong and the mercurial talent that is Peter Whittingham had no intentions of crossing the ball. Instead he curled a beauty inside the post, almost an impossible angle. Cardiff City fans have seen Whitts do that several times, most memorably away at Leicester City in the play-off first leg 3 seasons ago. No player has the right to score those, especially not in the Championship!

That goal effectively sealed the points, and is well worth a watch on Cardiff City Player or the Football League Show highlights. Whittingham punished Blackpool’s and Evatt’s mistake, just once again proving that ‘he does what he wants’ !
