Cardiff City recently signed promising young centre-back Anthony Gerrard in a cut-price deal from Wallsall. Although less experienced, his signing was better received by the fans than Paul Quinn or Mark Hudson and Saddlers fans everywhere were disgruntled by the meagre fee.

Former Cardiff City man Rhys Weston was a team-mate of Gerrard’s for the past two seasons and is adamant we’ve got ourselves a bargain. Weston told the NOTW:

‘To get a player like Anthony for £200,000 is an absolute steal.

‘Only a year ago Walsall were valuing Anthony at £750,000 but because of the current financial climate nobody came in for him.Cardiff have taken advantage of the situation and getting him for £250,000 is a great bit of business.’

‘I played with Anthony for two years and he’s a hell of a player. There’s no reason why he can’t go on to play in the Premier League.’

Gerrard has acquited himself well thus far, and shown himself to be a passionate and committed team player. What was noticable in the friendly was his constant talking at the back – a welcome sight with the quiet McNaughton and Gyepes.

Weston was far from a fans favourite at Ninian Park and was made a scapegoat by Bluebirds fans. Nevertheless he was a determined and committed individual who never hid on the pitch, and was a great guy off it.

Gerrard is expected to start the season on the bench, but should get a chance to force his way past Gyepes or Hudson in the way that Roger Johnson did – the comparisons are evident between the two – and are favourable to Gerrard.
