Cardiff City striker Rudy Gestede has marked his first call-up to the Benin squad with a goal after equalising for his adopted country before seeing ‘The Squirrels’ fall to a 3-1 defeat to Algeria – also seeing their goalkeeper red carded late on.

Gestede has spent a long week with Benin, which is not the best timing for the powerful striker since he could well have been looking at starting City’s next game due to Craig Bellamy having played 2 games in quick succession for Wales. Gestede will compete with Fraizer Campbell, Heidar Helguson and Joe Mason for positions in attack with CB39 likely to be rested.

The defeat means Benin face a difficult struggle to qualify for the World Cup, sitting in third place. Congratulations to Rudy though and he will surely be a regular feature in the Benin squad from now on.
