Cardiff City’s Hungarian defender Gabor Gyepes was one player to benefit from the fall-out after our woeful performance in defeat to Plymouth Argyle as the Hungarian was handed his first Bluebirds start in place of club captain Darren Purse.

Gyepes had made two substitute appearances away from home for the Bluebirds, as n injury replacement during a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest and as a replacement following a (later rescinded) Purse red card at QPR. For many, this was the first look at the former Northampton Town defender.

Gyepes does not look all that dis-similar to Purse and slotted in alongside Roger Johnson for this weeks midweek game against Reading. It was always going to be tough against the division’s leading scorer Kevin Doyle but Gyepes was an impressive figure in a re-shuffled Bluebirds defense.

Reading’s 1st goal came when Gyepes was in the opposition penalty area so little blame could be attached while Gunnarsson’s equaliser was an excellent finish although allowed to much room on the edge of the area.

There were some real plus signs for Gyepes who proved strong, dominant in the air and was the source of our better distrubution from the back. Indeed, Gyepes far outshone the likes of Johnson and Kennedy whose long aimless balls were a waste of possession and source of frustration to fans and players alike.

Gyepes also looked more of a threat in the opposition area – perhaps able to take some pressure (and marking) away from Johnson after twice getting his head on corners. Although he could direct neither on target, he did alt least look more of a nuisance than Purse or Loovens – neither of whom posed much of a goal threat.

Gyepes is likely to get a run of games now to prove his worth. There has rarely been doubt he can be a good performer at this level as a former Wolves defender and Hungary International – if he can remain injury free the £200k buy could cement a place alongside Roger Johnson for the season.
