Fowler signs, is the man they call ‘God’ City`s biggest ever signing?

With the signing of Robbie Fowler all but completed, Cardiff fans around the world have hailed the move as the biggest transfer in the 108 year history of the football club. The man nicknamed God by Liverpool fans has won 5 major trophies during his career and scored an impressive 224 goals.

Further evidence to back up the claim of him being the biggest signing this club has ever made comes when you study the table of all time Premiership goal scorers. Fowler lies 4th, behind only Alan Shearer, Andy Cole and Thierry Henry.

However older fans have thrown a name into the hat to match Fowler, John Charles. Charles was a Bluebird from 1963-1966. Not only was Charles a world class Centre Forward, he was equally talented at Centre Half. In 1997 he was voted the greatest foreign player ever to play in Serie A, beating such football icons as Maradona, Michel Platini, Marco Van Basten and Zinedine Zidane. While Charles is without doubt the greatest Welsh footballer of all time, and perhaps even the best British footballer of all time, I personally believe that his signing does not compare to the one of Toxteth Terror Fowler.

Football has changed immensely since the days of Charles and become a billion pound business. The signing of Robbie Fowler will do many things for the football club. Aside from the fact they are getting a world class finisher of the ball, Fowler will ensure higher gates and sell thousands of replica shirts, all with his name on the back. With his wages reported to be around £ 10,000 a week with bonuses for goals and promotion, it is highly likely that the excitement surround Fowler and the club as a whole will ensure that as long as Fowler stays fit, he will pay for himself. A post on a Cardiff City message board shows 2 City fans flying all the way from Johannesburg to see Fowler in action on his debut against Stoke City. If it has inspired them to travel thousands of miles to watch City, just imagine what it will do to the many thousands of floating fans that can be attracted to Ninian Park when times are rosy. South Wales also has many Liverpool fans, many of whom will be tempted to Ninian Park to watch a true idol.

John Charles is undoubtedly the greatest player ever to grace Ninian Park, but the impact that Robbie Fowler will create ensures that this is indeed the biggest incoming transfer ever to take place down on Sloper Road. Robbie Fowler is a Bluebird, and half the world knows it.
