Some of the most controversial and widely debated topics in football, the role of agents in modern transfers, has involved Cardiff City over the last few days.
This particular case has been rumbling on for several years and involves one of the biggest transfers in the clubs history – the sale of Robert Earnshaw to West Brom in August 2004.
The case hinges around the problem that Earnshaw’s agent Mel Eves seemingly acted on behalf of both Earnshaw and W.B.A. and not only for one party as is allowed. Earnshaw himself raised the doubts when he complained that he did not know the agents and the fees paid during the transfer.
Eves has now been fined £12,250 by the football governing body, Fifa, after being found guilty of acting for both West Brom and Earnshaw, after receiving payments from both parties. Eves plans to appeal against the decision.
Before last week, the Earnshaw deal was the largest sale in Cardiff City history and was necessary to keep the club afloat. The £5m sale of Michael Chopra last week shows the progress made by Cardiff City FC in a few short years, and the majority of the sale money is now available for transfers with which to strengthen the squad and club further.
