Cardiff City lost a great deal of leadership and experience when Dave Jones allowed Darren Purse to walk away from the club on a free transfer. Much has been said and written about what Darren offered the team, but he desperately wants first team football.

It was no suprise that he found a new club immediately and Sheffield Wednesday were quick to secure a committed and experienced Championship campaigner for no transfer fee. Now, the Owls have named Pursey as their captain for the forthcoming season – replacing last year’s skipper Richard Wood.

At Cardiff City, Purse was club captain – but for the past two seasons he was little more than a fringe player meaning that the likes of Stephen McPhail and Joe Ledley took the captain’s armband as matchday captains.

We are in the same boat as Sheffield Wednesday and look set to hand the captain’s armband to a new arrival – Mark Hudson is the frontrunner though Anthony Gerrard and Paul Quinn may hope for the nod. Joe Ledley is an outside bet, but could be offered the captaincy if he were to commit to a new contract.
