Cardiff City were well represented at last night’s 5th round FA Cup replay between Middlesborough and Sheffield United as a grinning Bluebirds chairman and manager were spotted keeping each other company.

Cardiff City will now face Middlesborough at the Riverside in the quarter-final courtesy of a bizarre own goal from Blades keeper Paddy Kenny. A low shot deflected over him, hit the post only to hit his hand and roll over the line. That goal came in the second period of extra time after 200 goalless minutes between the sides.

Jones and Ridsdale will not have been too disheartened by what they saw. It must be said that Middlesborough were a cut above their visitors for the entire game, but a combination of sturdy defending, impatience and poor finishing kept Boro at bay. It seemed that all Sheff Utd had to do was keep the midfield and defence very tight and nullify the attacking threats of Alfonso Alves and Stewart Downing.

By no means can Cardiff expect a result, but they have no reason to fear their hosts. Middlesborough have some real talent in the ranks, but their quality failed to shine through last night, and in the previous game. If Cardiff play to their strengths, and play well – they can get a result here and with the prize being a day trip to Wembley for the semi-finals – it’s by no means a foregone conclusion for ‘Boro.
